Manchester United again missed the chance to make up ground on Chelsea with a 1-1 draw against Everton yesterday.

Bruno Fernandes cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s bizarre opening goal to earn United a point from a spiky game.

Given how close United came to losing the game at the death, there are some questions for Solskjaer to answer.

What does Solskjaer do about de Gea?

De Gea has now made seven mistakes leading to United conceding a goal in the Premier League this season.

Solskjaer has an experienced international replacement on the bench in Sergio Romero and he seldom lets United down when called upon.

The thought of making a change may have crossed his mind but Solskjaer needs to find the formula to get his first choice stopper on top form.

Of course the situation with Dean Henderson will come to a head in the coming months and Solskjaer has to get the goalkeeping situation right.

What happened in the second half?

United have been starting slowly and got off to the worst possible beginning here but they actually recovered well in the first half.

Fernandes’ goal was a deserved reward for that improvement and Solskjaer may have expected his side to go on and control the game in the second half.

United knew a win would take them to within a point of Chelsea – who dropped points again this weekend – but it was Everton who made much of the second half running.

Having got themselves into a good position within the match, United’s failure to take full advantage should concern Solskjaer.

How to explain Martial’s off day?

Anthony Martial has been flying since the winter break but he was way off the boil yesterday.

He had just 33 touches, no shots on target and a passing accuracy of 68.4 per cent, the lowest of any outfield player in red.

Martial should have been brimming with energy and confidence but he was always on the fringes of the game.

He struggled to get out of first gear and the fact he was substituted late on with United chasing a winner tells its own story.

Consistency is one of Martial’s biggest issues and Solskjaer will be keen to avoid too many more performances like yesterday’s.
