Ruben Amorim will be pleased for the most part with his Manchester United team’s performance against Lyon.
The much anticipated quarter final clash lived up to the pre-game expectations, with four goals shared equally between the home side and visitors.
Manchester United will feel that this was a huge missed opportunity, having been the better team, but Lyon took the lead after a massive error from Andre Onana.
Ruben Amorim’s side responded well, equalising right at half-time through Leny Yoro as he headed home after a Manuel Ugarte assist.
United then took a lead with Joshua Zirkzee scoring from a brilliant Bruno Fernandes pass, the goal looked like the winner. However, as United pushed for a third, Lyon equalised with another Onana error, seeing the game end Lyon 2-2 United.
Despite the disappointment of not winning, United will take a draw back to Old Trafford, where Amorim will be confident of his side finishing off the Ligue 1 side.
After the game, there has been one player up for particular praise.
Ruben Amorim lauds Yoro’s performance for Manchester United
Thursday night was a breakout performance for Yoro, as he dominated defensively but also demonstrated quality going forward, scoring and getting involved in carrying the ball forward from defense.
Yoro was United’s best player in the game, and now his head coach, Amorim, has been speaking to the press about his qualities.
“Yeah, it’s really good. He’s really confident. I think he’s improving. The physicality was something that he was struggling [with].
“He didn’t have pre-season, so we had to maintain Leny sometimes with a little bit problems, and we start again. So we are seeing all the work that all the staff is doing with Leny.
“He feels at home in Carrington, in our club. So you can see that he’s a top, top player.”
This is high praise from Amorim, and he is spot on, as Yoro had his best performance yet for United as he showcased more authority on the ball and grabbed hold of the game at times.
After a season to bed in, Yoro is proving why he was so sought after last summer. Next season, he looks primed to kick on and become top-class for United.
MUTV pundits rave about Leny Yoro performance
Yoro is proving he can play at the top level, and for much of the night, he was the star of the show for United.
Following the game, MUTV commentary pair Liam Bradford and Ben Thornley were full of praise for Yoro.
Bradford began, “Leny Yoro was probably the standout player for the opening 75 minutes of that game. he didn’t put a foot wrong; he was absolutely brilliant.”
Agreeing with this, Thornley added: “The fact Yoro is developing the confidence to be able to break out which in this system you need to be able to do. You need a defender who can carry the ball, and we saw that in the second half, but he was the one who got us back in it.”
Yoro can hold his head high with that composed and mature display. More of the same next week, hopefully.
