Defeat in the Carabao Cup quarter-final was the fate United suffered on Thursday against Tottenham.
Losing will never be something Ruben Amorim finds acceptable however he will have taken a number of positives from the 4-3 defeat to Tottenham in London.
Manchester United came from 3-0 down to claw back to a competitive 4-3 scoreline, which will have told Amorim plenty about his squad with resilience being a clear strength.

United dominated Spurs and nine times out of 10 would be progressing to face Liverpool, which does make the loss less of a pain. But rather exciting as we can see the progress being made.
However, the big negative is that defeat does see Amorim’s first chance for a trophy go amiss. Something he didn’t sound too concerned about after the game.

Ruben Amorim is not phased by Carabao Cup exit
Goals from Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo and Jonny Evans brought United within touching distance of shocking a poor Spurs side who benefitted from Altay Bayindir’s struggles in goal.
Speaking after the game, Amorim was actually upbeat and told reporters that trophies don’t indicate progress, something which goes against his predecessor.
“We cannot think in that way of if we are winning silverware we are okay. No, it will be a long wait. We are improving as a team.
“Our goal is to win the Premier League, how long it will take? I don’t know but that is our goal.”
This comment from Amorim is spot on, as we saw with Erik ten Hag in the past. The Dutchman often claimed that by winning the FA Cup, he was showing progress – despite finishing eighth in the league last season.
However, while Amorim is against Ten Hag in this situation, he is aligned with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who claimed winning trophies was not as important as progressing up the league – arguing that by progressing trophies will eventually arrive anyway.
Omar Berrada is targeting a Premier League crown in 2028, so if Amorim is aiming for that, surely the progression will see trophies. It does not matter that he won’t win the Carabao Cup.
Manchester United are getting there under Amorim
Things have not been perfect for Amorim so far, but it seems pretty clear to us that the head coach is destined to bring the club back to the top.
Amorim has had barely any time to coach his players on the training ground, yet has now been to the Etihad and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and been the better side in both.
Amorim highlighted this himself after the game.
“I think if you look at the game, we were the best team but they were more clinical. The fight from the lads was really important for me.”
Things are looking good for Amoirm, with his United now dominating teams and deserving to win, soon we imagine this will turn into wins. Exciting times for the Red Devils.
