Ruben Amorim almost made unwanted history against Viktoria Plzen, before Manchester United completed a comeback.
Coming from behind and scoring late winners is the Manchester United way, and it seems Ruben Amorim has fully immersed himself.
The Portuguese coach saw his side go 1-0 down due to a howler from Andre Onana in the 48th minute.
However, Amorim’s substitutions were inspired, with Rasmus Hojlund breaking Wayne Rooney’s record as he scored both of the goals to complete the comeback as United won 2-1.
Due to picking up the three points, Amorim matched the record of Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby of winning his first two European games as United boss – something the trio have done exclusively.

Ruben Amorim almost set an embarrassing record against Viktoria Plzen
After conceding in the 48th minute it looked like United were headed for a third successive loss, right up until Hojlund’s brace.

This would not only have been a miserable record to start the season but also a loss would have seen Amorim do something he had never done before.
It would have been the first time as a manager that Amorim lost three games in a row – an embarrassing record to break just six games into his spell as United head coach.
While not detrimental, it is not something Amorim would have wanted and the game was effectively a must-win fixture. Instead, the Portuguese coach made positive history.
By beating Plzen, Amorim became the first United boss to win in the Czech Republic.
Manchester United now well-placed for Europa League success
After failing to win any of the first three games in the Europa League campaign under Erik ten Hag, United sat outside the top 24 in the league phase.
However, beating PAOK under Ruud van Nistelrooy, followed up by two wins under Amorim against Bodo/Glimt and Plzen leaves United not only in the top 24 but in the automatic qualification spots at 7th place.
| # | Team | Games | Points |
| 6th | Galatasaray | 6 | 12 |
| 7th | Manchester United | 6 | 12 |
| 8th | Rangers | 6 | 11 |
| 9th | Tottenham | 6 | 11 |
| 10th | FCSB | 6 | 11 |
This puts United in an excellent position to skip the play-off round and head straight to the round of 16.
With two games left, United need just one win to guarantee progression of some kind. United face both Rangers and FCSB in January – two teams below Amorim’s side in the league.
United’s best chance of a trophy in 2025 looks more and more likely.
