Ruben Amorim has matched feat only Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby managed at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim took his Manchester United side on the road in Europe on Thursday, beating Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

After the 2-1 win, Rasmus Hojlund will claim the spotlight, scoring his sixth and seventh of the season and fifth under Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United were slow out of the traps, though. Amorim’s half-time team talk inspired a better performance, even if the second half started with Plzen scoring.

It was United’s first win away in Europe since March 2023, and remarkably also, it ended Amorim’s personal two-game losing streak at the perfect time: three days before the Manchester Derby.

This was Amorim’s second successive win in Europe as United head coach, after also beating Bodo/Glimt two weeks ago.

Ruben Amorim achieves feat only Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby managed

Amorim coming from behind to beat Plzen also saw the 39-year-old Portuguese coach join two Old Trafford greats in the history books.

By winning his first two games in Europe as United boss, Amorim has joined both Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby as the only managers of the club to do so.

To be sharing records with United’s two best-ever managers cannot be a bad thing and certainly bodes well for Amorim.

Interestingly, there were 34 years between Busby’s first two games and Fergsuons. While there have also been exactly 34 years between Ferguson’s and Amorims.

The universe could be letting us know Amorim is the one.

Amorim’s Manchester United record six games in

If Amorim is the chosen one to bring United back to the promised land, then we are certainly still on rung one of the ladder back to the pinnacle of football.

We are six games into the Amorim era and despite some encouraging signs, United are still a million miles off where Amorim would want his team to be.

So far United have won three, lost two and drawn one, which is not a bad record considering the packed schedule and limited time on the training pitch.

The next one is up next though, as United take on Manchester City in the derby. City have one win in 10 games and United must take this chance to pile on the misery.
