Manchester United walked to a convincing victory over FCSB on Thursday, but there remained one huge issue.

Ruben Amorim will be heading back to Manchester, pleased with his side picking up an important win on a tough away day in Europe.

Manchester United were in control from start to finish against FCSB, yet due to familiar issues, it wasn’t until the second-half that a lead was established.

United took the lead through Diogo Dalot, with the man of the match Kobbie Mainoo providing the assist.

It was 2-0 not long after when the breathtaking Mainoo got his first goal of the season, with Alejandro Garnacho the provider.

This was a solid win for United which never looked in doubt, but for Amorim, there will still be frustrations.

Manchester United missed seven big chances vs FCSB

The result for United was excellent and gave Amorim the win and play-off bye he desired in February. But United’s two goals were actually a disappointing underperformance in front of goal.

In the game, United had 21 shots which resulted in 2.88 expected goals – while also hitting the woodwork twice.

However, the annoying part is Amorim’s side had eight big chances and missed seven of them. These chances were spread across five players.

So really, United should have made the game beyond doubt much earlier and inflicted a heavy scoreline if only finishing was better.

This has been an issue throughout Amorim’s reign and plays a part in United’s desire to strengthen the attack this month.

An attacking addition could yet happen with Mathys Tel linked to United, but Garnacho must not be sacrificed. United must be working on finishing relentlessly in training to fix this, with Amorim aware of the problem.

Ruben Amorim is aware of this huge problem

The problem of scoring goals is not something exclusive to Thursday’s win, but rather has been impactful for United under Amorim and also Erik ten Hag.

Speaking after the game to CBS Sports, Amorim revealed that while happy with his players, he demands that more goals are scored when we create that many chances.

“I think the lads did a good job. Clean sheet again, created some chances [but] we have to score more goals because today we had the opportunities.”

Amorim is spot on to demand this, as some of the chances missed were agonising, such as Mainoo’s first-half opportunity and Garnacho’s one-on-one.

However, the team is clearly improving so we will have to hope this is also something that improves as the players develop.
