Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville admitted that he could not work out in the moment why Amorim decided to remove wantaway United striker Zirkzee.
“He’ll point to injuries and AFCON,” he said.
“But every team is in a similar situation. I’m not sure what happened with Zirkzee. If he’s not injured, it’s a bizarre substitution to make.”

Neville suggested that Amorim must be ready to weather the storm of criticism coming his way after the Red Devils’ deeply disappointing display against Wolves.
“It’s going to be painful for Ruben Amorim,” he said.
“He’s going to get serious questions in his press conference.”
The 50-year-old United legend added: “There will be a painful aftermath for Ruben Amorim.”
United’s result against Wolves means they will finish 2025 in sixth place in the Premier League table, with fourth-place Liverpool two points clear with a match in hand.
The Red Devils will now travel to Elland Road for their first Premier League match of 2026, with United facing Leeds United in a 12:30pm kick-off on Sunday.
