Mike Dean’s comments suggest Nottingham Forest star had the right to be furious after Man Utd loss

Manchester United are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. They beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the night.

All things considered, an extremely good result. Manchester United and Erik ten Hag were under immense pressure to get the victory on the night, otherwise, it could have been a catastrophe of a week for the Red Devils.

They did have some stand-out performers. Casemiro was Man of the Match with his goal, Andre Onana was an unsung hero between the sticks and Sofyan Amrabat had one of his best games in a Manchester United shirt.

But the moment that stole the headlines was the Casemiro goal. Should it have stood?

Morgan Gibbs-White furiously reacts to Casemiro goal

In a now-deleted Instagram story – Nottingham Forest attacker Morgan Gibbs-White reposted an image from SportBible, which depicted a frame-by-frame still of the offside line leading to the Casemiro goal, alongside the Virgil van Dijk disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup Final.

The caption that accompanied the post read:

‘Casemiro’s goal against Nottingham Forest was given after VAR agreed there was no offside, even with Raphael Varane in an offside position.’

‘Virgil van Dijk’s goal against Chelsea in the League Cup final did not stand due to Endo standing in an offside position,’ with a confused emoji after this.

Former Premier League referees’ comments on the Van Dijk header may suggest that Gibbs-White has a reason to be infuriated.

Mike Dean comments suggest Morgan-Gibbs White should be angry

Mike Dean told Sky Sports on air after the disallowed goal in the EFL Cup Final:

“The only thing I’ve got an issue with is that Endo may well have blocked the player that may well have been coming back with Van Dijk on the edge of the area. That’s the only thing I can think they are looking at,” Dean begins.

“Endo is watching the defender and stopping him from getting back into a position to make a challenge on Van Dijk. Where the ball’s drop-in zone is, that’s where Colwill would have been, and that is why the goal has been chalked off. It’s subjective offside.”

So, in reality – what is the difference here? Quite frankly we’re not too sure, and in our opinion, both goals should have stood.

VAR was allegedly made for ‘clear and obvious errors’, to which these are both neither. It’s becoming ridiculous and infuriating now, and we can see why the Forest star reacted with a little bit of saltiness.
