Manchester United have lost the Community Shield to Manchester City on penalties after an entertaining game.
Erik ten Hag’s side struggled in the opening 30 minutes and were lucky not to find themselves behind when James McAtee hit the post.
However, Manchester United fought their way back into the game and created good chances themselves, with Mason Mount unable to get on the end of an Amad pass and Marcus Rashford missing a golden opportunity.
The promising display continued in the second half and United eventually took the lead through Alejandro Garnacho’s fine finish.
Bernardo Silva equalised late on to force a penalty shoot-out which was won 7-6 by the Blues, with Jonny Evans skying the decisive spot kick in sudden death.
You can see how the game unfolded and the reaction to the result below.

Bernardo barges into Garnacho for no reason off the ball and is booked for it.
[Link]83′ – United change
Sancho is on for Rashford, it looks like Zirkzee won’t be getting on today.

[Link]79′ – McTominay swings and misses!
Rashford heads down from a corner and it lands perfectly for McTominay but he swings and gets nothing but air. Another chance goes begging!
[Link]71′ – Rashford hits the post!
United counterattack with speed as Garnacho latches onto Fernandes’ pass, he lays off Rashford but he can only hit the post. Another shocking miss!
69′ – Savinho threatening
Savinho is already looking like a problem as he plays through Nunes but Martinez is across to make a crunching tackle.
Moments earlier, Fernandes had a chance but he snatched at his tame shot rather than passing across to Rashford.
[Link]66′ – Still 0-0
The subs have seen the game lose it’s competitive energy a bit, with neither team getting a sight at goal in recent minutes. If the game ends goalless, it will go straight to penalties.
[Link]59′ – Collyer in at left-back
20-year-old Toby Collyer is on for his senior debut and he’s slotted in at left-back with Martinez moving into the middle.
[Link]57′ – Quadruple United change
McTominay, Collyer, Pellistri and Garnacho are coming on for Amad, Mount, Maguire and Mainoo.
[Link]56′ – United on top
Fernandes delivers an excellent ball into the box but there’s no striker there to meet it. United have been well on top in the second half.
[Link]53′ – Fernandes goal disallowed!
Fernandes curls a stunning effort into the top corner but he is correctly flagged for off-side.
46′ Bright start for United
Rashford gets some space on the left and runs at Akanji but is eventually hounded out. Bright start.
[Link]45′ – Half-time
An entertaining half ends 0-0. City were on top for half an hour but United played themselves back into the game and have created two brilliant chances.
[Link]43′ – Doku goes closes
In a move similar to his goal in the final, Doku cuts inside and shoots towards the near post but this time he’s dragged it just wide of the post.
[Link]40′ Problem for Maguire
Maguire, who was a surprise name on today’s team sheet after his injury troubles, appears to be struggling and is receiving treatment.
Casemiro is also being soon to by the doctors.
[Link]35′ – Rashford misses
It’s another fantastic move as Casemiro, Mainoo and Fernandes intricately play through City. Rashford gets the ball in space on the left but his finish is poor and well wide.
[Link]30′ – United should lead!
United delightfully play through the City defence with Casemiro and Amad combining. The winger goes through on goal but instead of shooting he tries to tee Mount up for a tap-in and gets the pass wrong.
Frustrating but promising from United.
28′ – United get a first sight at goal
Amad finally gets the ball in a dangerous position and he jinks past Gvardiol into the box but his shot is wide. The first real attack for United.
[Link]23′ – McAtee hits the post
Martinez gives the ball away yet again but McAtee doesn’t make United pay as his bending effort bounces off the post. They’re getting closer and United don’t look to have improved much.
[Link]21′ – Bobb skies over
City cut through United again, this time with a lovely Kovacic pass to Bobb. The youngster cuts inside but skies his effort. He should have done better but you sense the goal is coming.
[Link]20′ – United get away with one
Rico Lewis bursts into the box unopposed and crosses to Haaland but it goes beyond the striker and he can do little with the ball before it’s cleared. The pressure is mounting.

Doku races past Dalot and evades Maguire to get in a great position but his cross is early and doesn’t find a Blue shirt. Warning for United.
[Link]13′ Oscar Bobb is a threat
Bobb has looked really slick and creative when he’s had the ball and is proving to be a threat on the right flank.
[Link]7′ – Scrappy start
Neither side has managed to create a real chance yet, with the play being quite frantic and scrappy. City are keeping the ball well but United look dangerous on the counter and are defending well.
[Link]3′ – How United are lining up
It is Martinez at left-back but he is pushing into midfield when United have the ball, leaving Evans on the left of a back three.
Rashford is out on the left wing, Amad the right and Mount and Fernandes centrally.
[Link]No Harry Amass
Harry Amass is a surprising omission from today’s match-day squad. The youngster has impressed this summer and there’s no left-back in the team.
It looks like Lisandro Martinez will be the one to play there instead.

Man City line up
Pep Guardiola has named a young City side with Nico O’Reilly, Rico Lewis and James McAtee all playing but Erling Haaland leads the line.
Zirkzee on the bench
Joshua Zirkzee will have to wait to make his United debut as he’s named on the bench today.
Marcus Rashford could lead the line or he might be on the left with either Amad or Bruno Fernandes as a false 9.
