After weeks of pre-season, the Premier League 2024/25 campaign kicks off on Friday and Manchester United vs Fulham prediction is the first to rule the roost as it is the curtain raiser of this campaign.
United come into the game on the back of a defeat in the Community Shield final vs Manchester City but the performance was encouraging.
Fulham, on the other hand, have seemingly troubled United in recent times, especially their manager Marco Silva, who always seems to be a banana skin for United managers.
He has upstaged United with his previous teams like Hull City and Everton as well so Erik ten Hag’s side will have to be on full alert. Here’s the Man United vs Fulham prediction, based on how the two teams shape up and the narrative surrounding the game-
Match breakdown
It has been a long time since Man United started a Premier League season with this goodwill and momentum in their sails.
What was already an encouraging window with the executive structure and Man United coaching staff overhaul got a turbo boost with the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
Add Joshua Zirkzee to the equation, and the team on Friday could have three debuts straightaway due to United’s injury problems. Erik ten Hag has already revealed Zirkzee is close to starting, while Harry Maguire’s presence in the squad means De Ligt could be eased into it with a spot on the bench.
Fulham, on the other hand, have also been active in the market, with Emile Smith-Rowe from Arsenal their marquee arrival who is expected to make his competitive debut vs United.
Contrary to United, they have no injury worries so Silva will have the full quota of players to choose from for this one.
Fulham’s interest in Scott McTominay adds a unique wrinkle to the game, as they’ve already had two bids rejected and the interest in McTominay has developed since then.
The Scotland international could be determined to prove his worth to both, Ten Hag and Fulham if he comes off the bench in the game.
Man United vs Fulham prediction
The split striker system with four midfielders providing extra passing options in the middle has worked to great effect against City so it will be interesting to see if Ten Hag persists with it or goes back to a more regular system against a team they are expected to dominate possession against.
The Londoners played pre-season games against Benfica, Sevilla, and Hoffenheim, winning two and losing against Sevilla, so match fitness won’t be an issue for them.
Fulham will defend in a deep block and try to hit United on transitions, which is why Ten Hag might be forced to abandon his City tactics for this.
A team with Zirkzee and two inside forwards, combined with flying full-backs in Mazraoui and Dalot should stretch Fulham out of that deep block and allow Fernandes and Co. to pick up spaces between the lines.
On transitions, Lisandro Martinez’s presence alongside a resurgent Casemiro should solve a lot of issues if United defend with a high line.
Expect United to start fast with the crowd in their sails, buoyed by the three debuts. An early goal will be crucial to build on that feeling of goodwill. If Fulham score first, however, that could puncture the atmosphere at Old Trafford so the importance of the first goal can’t be understated.
Even if United do score first, there just isn’t enough stability in United’s defence right now so remain confident about a clean sheet.
Taking all that into account, United in Focus predicts Man United 3-1 Fulham.
