Manchester United were pushed hard for a draw by a talented young Southampton side at the weekend.

The visitors were helped by Casemiro’s sending off in the first half, leaving United playing around an hour with 10 men.

Southampton made it difficult for United even before the red card, and they felt they were unlucky not to get all three points.

One of the impressive players for the Saints was young midfield talent Romeo Lavia.

Romeo Lavia impresses

Romeo Lavia left Manchester City last summer to pursue first team football at Southampton, and the 19-year-old has been making an impression in the Premier League.

At the end of last month The Mail reported Manchester United are watching Lavia with a view to a summer move. City can only activate a buy-back clausee in 2024.

Lavia seized the chance to impress Erik ten Hag with a busy performance as Southampton held United to a goalless draw.

It was a timely display because Casemiro’s red card has highlighted a lack of depth in defensive midfield, which could be troubling over his upcoming four-game ban.

Lavia is the type of promising young talent who could benefit from learning under Casemiro, allowing United to rotate more freely.

The youngster completed 90 per cent of his passes, while also creating one chance, and winning six duels.

United supporters took to Twitter to praise the youngster and talk him up as a potential signing.
