Manchester United supporters had high hopes for Sofyan Amrabat when he arrived on transfer deadline day.
But the first time Manchester United fans saw him in action, Sofyan Amrabat was stuck out at left-back amid an injury crisis.
Since then it has been an inconsistent run, with Amrabat often getting just 45 minutes, and rarely starting consecutive games in midfield.
Kobbie Mainoo‘s emergence saw further questions about Amrabat’s long-term future at the club. Last night he got the chance to show what he can do, and he seized it.

Sofyan Amrabat performance praised
Sofyan Amrabat had one shaky moment in the first half when a pass back was intercepted and led to a Chelsea chance, after that, he was absolutely spot on.
The Morocco international outclassed expensive Chelsea duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, really dominating the game as it went on.
Manchester United fans were in agreement this was Amrabat’s best ever game in a Red Devils shirt.
Here is a look at how supporters agreed on the midfielder’s display, via comments collated from social media.
- “Amrabat had a good game, Like the best he’s had in a United shirt”
- “That was Amrabat’s best game. Was left on his own to chase runners in the first half but grew into the game. Was flawless in the second half.”
- “Amrabat best game by a mile tonight. 1 pass aside he was immense.”
- “Amrabat had his best game. Chelsea’s meek midfield helped.”
- “Amrabat’s best game for United tonight. Mopped up brilliantly and gave the early ball. Starting to see what he can bring to this team.”
- “Amrabat had his best game so far for us, against two midfielders who cost £100m+.”
- “Amrabat really really played great tonight, the best a DM has played for us in a long time.”
- “Amrabat’s best game so far in United’s colours.”
Manchester United need to look at Mainoo and Amrabat together
What Manchester United have not done so far is select Kobbie Maino and Sofyan Amrabat in the same team.
Together they could give United a lot of control in midfield, however, it’s hard then to accommodate Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes.
Do you go to four in midfield, then sacrifice an extra attacker? This is something Erik ten Hag has not yet been inclined to do.
Scott McTominay is currently making himself undroppable, which means for now, it is going to be Mainoo or Amrabat, rather than both.
Maybe Ten Hag should follow Amrabat’s suggestion that McTominay should move into a striker role.
