Furious Manchester United fans singled out Luke Shaw after the England defender’s performance in the 3-1 Premier League defeat to Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Brentford opened the scoring against Manchester United in the first 10 minutes after Igor Thiago beat Altay Bayindir from close range at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Altay Bayindir found himself haunted in the opening 20 minutes again after the United player pushed Kevin Schade’s close-range strike out towards Igor Thiago.

Thiago fired the rebound past Bayindir to complete his brace, but Benjamin Sesko made his mark six minutes later and finally opened his United goalscoring account.

Despite Benjamin Sesko’s impact in the first half, Brentford maintained their lead over United and the Bees went into the break with a 2-1 scoreline in their favour.

The Red Devils could have pulled themselves level in the 76th minute from the spot-kick, but Bruno Fernandes stepped up and the United captain’s effort was saved.

Luke Shaw’s Premier League performance is the final straw for Man Utd fans after the defeat to Brentford

Luke Shaw started Saturday’s 3-1 defeat and the England international played until the 81st-minute mark before Ruben Amorim subbed him off for Mason Mount.

The 30-year-old Red Devils left-back was deployed as a makeshift centre-back vs Brentford in the three-man backline of Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United.

However, United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, were baffled with how poorly Shaw played in the Red Devils backline against Brentford.

“Luke Shaw should not be starting for Manchester United, but here we are,” a Red Devils supporter wrote.

Someone else commented: “Luke Shaw should not be starting for us in 2025.”

And a third X user posted: “Constantly starting Luke Shaw is a managerial issue, not a personnel issue.”

“Luke Shaw in [the] Man Utd starting XI in 2025 is crazyyyy [sic],” another tweeted.

While a fifth added: “Maguire, [Diogo] Dalot, Luke Shaw should be nowhere near [the United] starting eleven…”

A sixth claimed: “Luke Shaw needs to stop playing. He shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting XI.”

Somebody else argued: “We have too many s— players. Starting Shaw in 2025 is a [shocking thing to do]. Said it all summer [that] we needed a CB. [Matthijs] De Ligt is ok, but that’s about it.”

Another United fan suggested: “[Man Utd] need a proper rebuild! How in 2025 are Maguire, Shaw [and] Dalot starting [matches] for Manchester United?”

Ruben Amorim must pull the plug on his Luke Shaw experiment in the Man Utd backline after the Brentford result

United’s misery at the Gtech Community Stadium was summed up with Mathias Jensen beating Altay Bayindir with a stunning long-range strike in injury time.

The pressure has once again returned on the shoulders of United manager Ruben Amorim, whose defensive set-up was incredibly poor in the first half on Saturday.

United lacked the pace needed to handle the Brentford attack, with Shaw being exposed alongside Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt in the three-man backline.

Shaw has been a shadow of his former self as a centre-back and his role on the left side leaves Leny Yoro, who has pace on his side, out of the United starting XI.
