Ruben Amorim got his team selection wrong on Monday night and Newcastle took full advantage.
It was a dismal end to a horrendous December for Manchester United, with a fifth league loss of the month equalling a record Sir Matt Busby set in 1962.
It was also the first time United lost three consecutive home league games since December 1978 to February 1979.
Ruben Amorim is making unwanted history left, right and centre at the moment. But against Newcastle, there is one decision he will be particularly dismayed over.
United were much better in the second half, but the first half was what killed Amorim’s chances – with his decision to play two players together proving very costly, as Gary Neville pointed out.

Gary Neville slams midfield of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen
Speaking on commentary for Sky Sports, Neville could barely believe how poor United were, labelling Amorim’s side the “worst team in England, pound for pound”.
Neville slammed Joshua Zirkzee during the game. While also calling out Amorim’s decision to start Casemiro and Christian Eriksen together.
“Casemiro and Eriksen shouldn’t be playing together in the Premier League.”
Neville seconded this after Newcastle’s second goal as he watched the pair bypassed in midfield with absolute ease.
“They should never be playing together with a combined age of 64. A simple move around Eriksen and Casemiro is nowhere near it. It’s so easy.”
Casemiro and Eriksen were poor, however the buck for this rests with Amorim who has already seen the pair struggle together due to their age and lack of mobility.

How Ruben Amorim reacted to Newcastle making it 2-0 against Manchester United
This midfield pairing can never play together again, with far better options available. Even with absences against Newcastle, there were superior choices on the bench.
After watching the Newcastle midfield run rings around United’s, Amorim dropped to his knees and recognised the options at his disposal.
After Newcastle made it 2-0, Amorim immediately sent Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer to warm up – a move which saw the former change the game.
It is not often Amorim is on the receiving end of criticism, as we all know what he is having to work with, but here he was at fault. Hopefully, he has learned from it.
