Former Premier League referee gives his verdict on Amad Diallo red card vs Liverpool

Manchester United defeated Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, with Amad Diallo grabbing the winner.

The young Ivorian winger had his best moment in a Manchester United jersey by a country mile when he was put through by Alejandro Garnacho in the 120th and slotting home past Caoimhin Kelleher to send Old Trafford into sheer delirium.

Amad deserved it. He has been given little to no game time this season, and when his opportunity arose. He took it.

However, after an insane high, came an insane low. Amad was immediately sent off after the winning strike, for taking his shirt off. He was already on a yellow. Was it harsh to have been sent off?

Dermot Gallagher gives Amad Diallo red card verdict

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher gave his comments on the Amad incident. He told Sky Sports:

“It’s 25 years since they decided this should happen so he should have got used to it by now!

“I don’t really think we should be talking about. It was one of the best games you’ve seen, one of the best refereeing performances I’ve ever seen.

“The referee is hamstrung, isn’t he. He’s gone through the game perfectly, it was so blatant that he’d taken his shirt off so it was a yellow card. It’s just unfortunate.

“It goes back to the famous Ryan Giggs goal. He took his shirt off and in certain areas of the world, it’s seen as offensive. So FIFA decided it was going to be outlawed. It’s not the ref’s fault.

“It’s just a law. It’s not one the referees like because he’s the pantomime villain now.

“I’d rather look at John Brooks [the referee] and say ‘for 120 minutes, you played your part in this spectacle’, and for one minute, it wasn’t in his hands.”

Fair enough. The law is the law, although some could argue he was unlucky to receive his first booking in the first place.

Amad Diallo on his red card

Amad spoke after the game about the fact he was sent off.

“I forgot the first yellow,” he told ITV Sport. “I’m very disappointed for that, a red card, but the most important for me is to win and against a big team like Liverpool is a big, big moment for me.

“Everyone came to me and said congratulations. I want to thank everyone, the fans were superb all game.”

A good attitude. Unfortunately, Amad will now miss a game – but which one is it?
