Manchester United had two substitutes link up to score the winner on Friday night against Fulham.
After several chances went amiss – including two from Bruno Fernandes in the first half – Erik ten Hag looked toward his bench and found the answer to his problems.
Alejandro Garnacho provided the assist for the winner, with a pacy cross into the box which Joshua Zirkzee then directed goalwards with a deft touch.
The goal on his debut meant Zirkzee joined Ruud van Nistelrooy in the history books as Dutchmen to score in their Premier League debut.
In scoring, Zirkzee also proved that this Manchester United team needs a striker – showing Ten Hag he may be wrong to have two number 10s on the pitch instead.
After scoring his goal on his debut, Zirkzee has been sent a message by his new Manchester United attacking teammate.

Garnacho sends Zirkzee a message
After scoring the winner, Zirkzee will have made himself an instant hero within Old Trafford.
Garnacho has clearly been impressed based on what he posted to Instagram after the game.
With a picture of him and Zirkzee embracing after they combined to go 1-0 up, Garnacho wrote: “Welcome to Manchester”, followed by a heart emoji.
Garnacho also tagged Zirkzee and left an ‘A’ emoji symbolising an assist.
In response, Zirkzee replied, “Vamos”, along with a flame emoji.
Among others to reply was Kobbie Mainoo as he left a heart emoji under the post.
Zirkzee and Garnacho both should start vs Brighton
Finally, the new season is underway and United will be content with how the opening game went thanks to some great bits of football and a deserved three points.
Garnacho in particular will be delighted as he made an impact once again from the bench, giving him two goal contributions already in just 60 minutes or so of football.
Zirkzee also made the ideal impact on his debut, coming off the bench and scoring with his first sight of goal – while he also showed some positive signs in the build-up and in pressing from the front.
After this, both are well-placed to start next weekend at the Amex against Brighton and they definitely both deserve to be playing.
