Fans call for Luis Campos after acclaimed talent spotter leaves Lille

Olivier Létang is the new president of Ligue 1 club Lille and has confirmed the immediate departure of transfer chief Luis Campos in his first press conference.

Lille sit top of the table in France, two places and a point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.

A large part of their success was down to the smart recruitment headed up by Campos, who brought the likes of Renato Sanches to the club.

Before that, Campos put together the Monaco squad which stunned Europe by making the Champions League semi-finals in the 2016/17 season.

Campost was linked to United back in 2019 by the MEN.

Some United fans reacted to the news on Twitter by urging Ed Woodward to appoint Campos as the club’s director of football.

That might make sense on paper, but Woodward talked about a director of football when Jose Mourinho was sacked and there’s still not been any significant movement on that score.

Mourinho is apparently close with Campos, so there’s also a chance he could join Tottenham as his next move.

That hasn’t stopped some United fans on Twitter dreaming about Campos coming in to head up our transfer operation and looking at his track record, it’s easy to see why.

Campos actually signed Anthony Martial for Monaco from Lyon back in 2013, for £4.4 million (BBC), before selling him to United for almost nine times that amount two years later.

He brought Fabinho and Bernardo Silva to Monaco as well, and they have both gone on to be Premier League title-winners.

Campos was also at Lille when they sold Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal for £72 million in 2019. Given how United have struggled to offload players for good money in recent years, that nous would be a welcome boost.

He also convinced a certain Kylian Mbappe to stay at Monaco and promoted the Frenchman to the first team, so it’s clear he’s got an eye for a player.
