Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury during the World Cup Final.

After missing out on the World Cup Final in 2022, Lisandro Martinez was selected to start the Final in 2026.

Lining up for Argentina against Spain at MetLife Stadium, Martinez was unfortunately unable to complete the first half.

Martinez went down inside his own box in the 44th minute after a collision, and remained on the turf.

Argentina’s medical staff made the signal that Martinez was unable to continue, and he was replaced by Nicolas Otamendi.

Martinez had picked up a yellow card eight minutes earlier after committing a foul inside the Spain half.

He was substituted with the score at 0-0. Argentina went on to lose 1-0 to Spain in extra-time.

Lisandro Martinez suffered another injury in the World Cup Final – Should he be part of Man Utd’s plans for 2026/27?

Is Martinez's talent worth putting up with the constant injuries?

Martinez injury curse strikes again

Lisandro Martinez was able to leave the pitch without a stretcher, but walked off with his hand holding his thigh.

The severity and impact of the injury is yet to be determined.

Manchester United fans know all about Martinez’s injury issues. He has missed huge stretches of recent seasons with fitness issues.

Martinez suffered a torn ACL in January 2025 before returning at the end of November. He then missed several weeks with a calf issue in early 2026.

As it stands, Martinez will be a key part of United’s plans for next season, but the injury situation is hugely frustrating.

If United received a strong offer from another club, it could make sense to cash in and try and sign a centre-back with a more reliable fitness record.

Especially with Matthijs de Ligt’s fitness problems already hanging over the club.
