David de Gea needed a performance like that. He was superb against Manchester City last night to keep a clean sheet.
It was such a shame that United could not win the tie, because his contribution to last night’s 1-0 victory deserved a place in the final.
This was a clean sheet for De Gea to be proud of, making four impressive saves and commanding his box.
If his display away at Watford last month was his worst of the season, this was his best.
It was probably the best performance De Gea has put in for United since the 1-0 win away at Tottenham at Wembley last January.

Statement performance
There have been growing calls for Sergio Romero or next season Dean Henderson to take De Gea’s place.
Their arguments are not without merit, but De Gea at the top of his game is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
He made saves with his hands, with his feet, and the only times City had the ball in the net, they were offside.
Last night summed up his tenure at United. A superb individual display, which the 10 men in front of him were not quite able to back up.
