James Garner was handed a long overdue first Manchester United start against Partizan Belgrade.
He gave a good account of himself as United won away from home for the first time this season, winning 1-0 through an Anthony Martial penalty.
Garner found it difficult to find space in the first half on the ball, but when he did, he was not afraid to try and pick out a pass.
He was eager to move United up the pitch, and defensively he made a valuable contribution, making three interceptions. This was only bettered by Scott McTominay (4).
Garner had one shot on goal, which was blocked by a defender. He managed 54 touches, before being substituted for Andreas Pereira in the 81st minute as United looked for fresh legs to close the game out.
Big step
His form for the under-23 team has been outstanding this season, scoring at a rate of nearly a goal every game from midfield.
The fact he now has Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s trust is important, and he did not let his manager down.
This was a professional performance, on a poor pitch, and both United and Garner are better off for playing him.
It’d still be a surprise if he starts at the weekend against Norwich, but Garner will fancy his chances of featuring away to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, and making a home debut against Partizan in the next Europa League game.
