Angel Gomes has failed to make Manchester United’s match day squad for the visit of Colchester United.
It comes a week after he was overlooked for the game with AZ Alkmaar, despite being pictured training days earlier.
Gomes is a highly talented player, but his future at United does not look too bright.
He has not signed a new contract and these continued omissions are not going to convince him to stay.
It is possible he has already signalled to the club he intends to quit when his deal expires in June, prompting him to be left out.
Yet in a similar situation, Tahith Chong has made the bench for both matches.
Gomes’ last appearance for United was the Europa League game away at Astana.
After last week’s omission against Alkmaar, we tried to take a wider view and suggest that Gomes might have been being saved for this fixture.
This latest snub is a real shame and it looks like the England under-20 international could be off.
He has been one of United’s brightest prospects for years and shone in pre-season.
In some of the opportunities he has been given this season, like away at Alkmaar in September, he was played out on the wing, not his preferred central role.
It looks likely Gomes will want to depart now, having not been able to win a role ahead of Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Juan Mata.
This is a position United could strengthen in January, to make his chances harder.
Perhaps Gomes might be injured, but this is not just about tonight. The last few months have been wasted.
We’d love to see him sign a new deal, and perhaps head out on loan, but it doesn’t look promising.
