Manchester United’s U18 side have got their FA Youth Cup campaign underway with a 5-0 win over Coventry.
Adam Lawrence will have been thrilled by the emphatic start his side made to the 2024/25 FA Youth Cup. Manchester United’s U18 side swept away Coventry at the Leigh Sports Village.
The scoreline upon the final whistle read United 5-0 Coventry, however, this was modest if we are being completely honest as the academy Red Devils saw a handful of chances go amiss – uncharacteristically.
The goals were split between Chido Obi and Gabriele Biancheri, with two for the Dane and a hat-trick for the Welshman as they ran rings around the Coventry back-line.
Obi blew fans away with his finishing, including a free-kick goal. Meanwhile, Biancheri was as brilliant as ever, with his all-round play evolving.

Gabriele Biancheri sends brilliant message after U18 win
Biancheri now has 20 goals this season – along with three assists – which is an incredibly impressive record one people are rightfully excited by.
After the game, however, Biancheri took to Instagram with a message suggesting he is not quite satisfied with the trio of goals he scored on Wednesday.
“Good win under the lights, happy to get 3 [points]. Onto the next”.
Biancheri then added: “Should’ve had 6”, followed by a ‘frustrated’ emoji.
In the comments, Biancheri’s teammates were reacting to his performance. This included his fellow goalscorer who simply commented with a heart emoji.
One response came from Shea Lacey as he reminded Biancheri of the fact he missed a penalty in the game, writing: “Pen son”.
Tyler Fletcher similarly joked with Biancheri, commenting: “Only 3?”
Summer addition to the academy Samuel Lusale joked that he’s sick of Biancheri scoring hat-tricks: “Oh not another one”.
Jaydan Kamason simply wrote: “Shock”. While James Overy labelled Biancheri a “bagsman”.
Finally, Jacob Devaney commented: “Main man”, which is a very fair representation of Biancheri’s role for the U18s.
Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup chances are looking strong
Last season, while the United U18s won the treble, the one they really would have wanted was the FA Youth Cup.
So with United’s academy U18s being unbeaten in the league and looking good value in the PL Cup, the Youth Cup was the final piece of the puzzle.
Lawrence will be desperate to win the crown as it will see him complete U18 management trophy-wise in a two-season period.
Having breezed through the third round, United now face Preston in which on paper a similar result should be attainable.
United are among the favourites to win the competition and we can’t wait to see this electric U18 side in action again.
