Manchester United’s under-18 signed off for the season at the weekend with a crushing 8-1 win over Middlesbrough.

This pushed United two points ahead of City, who had a game in hand, leading to an agonising wait to see if our cross-city neighbours would slip up.

City played their game in hand against Burnley on Wednesday lunchtime, and won 1-0. A tight game was sealed by a 74th minute winner, sealing the title and pushing United down to second place.

United actually ended the season with one more win than City, but one less point, after losing four, whereas City drew more of the games they failed to win.

Under-18s captain Martin Svidersky sent a message out on Instagram yesterday evening, reflecting on the season. He said he was proud of the team’s efforts.

Svidersky was one of the team’s best and most consistent players through the season, playing in a variety of roles, in midfield and defence.

The Slovakia youth international has already overcome a serious knee injury, sustained in 2018 shortly after he signed for the club.

He signed a professional contract last year and he has done well this season, featuring eight times for United’s under-23 side as well as playing in 20 of 24 league games for the under-18s.

Svidersky turns 19 in October and along with a number of his colleagues, he will be stepping up to the under-23s on a regular basis next season.

It is clear that he is a player who is very much admired among his teammates, with Bjorn Hardley, Charlie McNeill, Dillon Hoogewerf, Charlie Savage, Alvaro Fernandez, Joe Hugill, Will Fish, and Zidane Iqbal among the several academy players to like his Instagram post, along with first team star Mason Greenwood.
