Manchester United’s academy sides have continued to make progress at the Adidas Generation Cup in Dallas.
United’s under-17s beat Minnesota United 2-0 in the final group game to make it three wins from three.
Captain Kobbie Mainoo scored United’s opener from the penalty spot, after winning the spot-kick.
Minnesota United had won their first two games too, making this a decisive fixture to see who would top the group to reach the knockout stages.
Manchester United had won 2-0 against Orlando City and 3-0 against Chicago Fire. Mainoo’s goal was his second of the tournament.
Ethan Wheatley had a shot cleared off the line in the second half as he sought to double United’s lead.
Moments later United did get the second goal, with striker Victor Musa latching onto a pass from Mainoo, pressuring the defender, and then lifting the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
United have not conceded a goal in the opening three games of the tournament, a testament to the coaching staff and the players.
United’s XI: Wooster, Ogunneye, Fredricson, Parker, Scanlon, Curley, Mainoo, Berry, Giggs, Wheatley, Musa.
The tournament is comprised of 40 teams at under-17 level and 40 in the under-15s. Matches take place over 60 minutes rather than 90.
United under-15s into knockout stages
United’s under-15 side reached the knockout rounds after a 4-1 win over Columbus Crew to top the group.
Bendito Mantato, Nehemiah Oriola, Joe Wilcock, and Rory Leech scored United’s goals in the win.
The under-15s play a last 16 knockout game against Portland Timbers up next, which takes place later tonight.
