Manchester United under-23s goalkeeper Paul Woolston has undergone an operation.

Woolston posted a photo from his hospital bed, commenting that he is ready for the challenges his recovery will bring.

Woolston’s exact injury is not disclosed, but the fact he needs a second operation suggests he will miss substantial time.

Young striker D’Mani Mellor required two operations last year after suffering an ACL injury. It’s very possible Woolston has suffered the safe fate.

Terrible timing

It’s a case of terrible timing for Woolston as he was heading into a pivotal period for his future.

Woolston’s contract was up this summer, and the MEN reported he was expected to be released.

This looks like an injury which will keep him sidelined several months. If it’s an ACL, possibly until 2022.

It’s possible United try to do right by Woolston and offer him a deal until the end of the year. At the least, the club could make rehab facilities open to him.

Woolston is 22 and he would have been looking for a club where he could play first team football.

He played seven games for United’s under-23s this season, although none so far in 2021, with Matej Kovar taking over since his return from a loan at Swindon Town. He was not even on the bench for the most recent under-23 fixture.

He signed for United in 2018 after a spell in Newcastle’s academy, during which he represented England at under-18 level.

Woolston was inundated with message from under-23 teammates wishing him a speedy recovery, and we wish him all the best too.
