International Watch: Ethan Laird and James Garner for England’s under-19s

It looks set to be a big season for James Garner at Manchester United, given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s emphasis on youth.

Even though he has had to be patient so far, he should get more games now that Europa League progress is sewn up and he got another chance to impress on England Under 19 duty.

He was joined by Manchester United team-mate Ethan Laird, who has trained with the first team and scored in the EFL Trophy this season.

England ran out comfortable 4-0 winners, as might have been expected, thanks to goals from Manchester City’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis and former Arsenal winger Xavier Amaechi either side of a double from ex-Liverpool hitman Bobby Duncan.

The United duo were left on the bench to start, which may please Solskjaer in terms of freshness if he chooses to use the pair in the coming weeks.

They were brought on just past the hour mark in a double substitution which saw Harwood-Bellis and his City team-mate Tommy Doyle.

Importantly, especially for Garner who could be needed to step in for Scott an injured McTominay at club level, the pair both came through the run-out unscathed and may hope to start when their side host North Macedonia on Saturday afternoon.
