There is no good time to suffer an injury and one Manchester United talent’s season ended in an unfortunate way.

Manchester United’s academy teams have enjoyed another strong season, with some players even making the step up into the first team.

Chido Obi and Harry Amass have made first team debuts under head coach Ruben Amorim, and there are likely to be one or two more between the end of the season.

It shows the academy is in good health, with the under-21s reaching the national semi-finals, while the under-18s finished in second place in the league, losing only one game.

The 18s played 24 games, winning 20, drawing three and losing once, and were pipped to the title by City who managed to win one more game and draw one fewer.

Dante Plunkett’s season ends on a low note

One of the new faces in the Manchester United under-18s set-up is Dante Plunkett, who signed a year ago from Aston Villa.

Plunkett made his debut as a trialist in the final 18s game of last season before his move became official.

The talented left-back has played 18 of 24 league games this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

Two assists came in the 13-1 demolition of Leeds, while one came in the penultimate match, a 4-0 win over Stoke City.

The final game of the season was a 3-1 win over Sunderland, where Plunkett was carried off the pitch in the 78th minute.

The 17-year-old shared a post on Instagram, where he was pictured with his head in his hands while being treated by the medical staff.

The exact nature of the injury was undisclosed, with Plunkett writing: “unfortunate ending.. I’ll be back.”

Support from teammates

Dante Plunkett’s recovery will be helped by supportive messages from his Manchester United academy teammates.

Chido Obi left a ‘heart emoji’, responding despite his first team duties, while Samuel Lusale wished ‘speedy recovery’.

While Plunkett might have had an outside hope of traveling on United’s postseason tour, the injury might not come at the worst time, with no under-18s fixtures scheduled until August.
