Manchester United’s U21 side was in action on Tuesday in the National League Cup against Brackley, and it was a night to forget.

For Manchester United, the National League Cup has been an unhappy tournament thus far, after one game on the books.

Match-day one saw United against Tamworth abandoned after Sekou Kone suffered a head injury, which looked very concerning, but he is recovering from it.

This week, United were in action against Brackley, with a very young team fielded, including Jim Thwaites and Bendito Mantato.

Thwaites assisted Jacob Devaney for the sole United goal; however, the ball was in the net on more than one occasion.

United were beaten 2-1 by Brackley in a disappointing performance, which deserved more, considering the chances that Travis Binnion’s side had.

Chido Obi had a number of opportunities, forcing a handful of good saves from the goalkeeper, but the Dane also thought he had scored.

At 2-0 down, Obi pounced on a sloppy touch by the Brackley defender, taking the ball off his foot before finishing coolly past the goalkeeper.

The referee ruled out the goal for a foul, but on further review, it looks incredibly soft, and Obi agrees.

Taking to his Instagram, Obi posted on his story with a screenshot of the incident, writing “Foul???”, followed by two laughing emojis.

Obi could not believe the goal didn’t count, but this should only further his motivation to grab a goal next time.

Chido Obi needs to start scoring for Manchester United

Last season, Obi had an incredible start at United, tearing the U18 Premier League apart and quickly being moved onward and into Ruben Amorim’s team.

The Dane is now back in the academy, learning and developing, as United haven’t even scratched the surface of Obi and his potential.

This season for the U21s, Obi has scored a handful of goals, however, not anywhere near enough that he is forcing his way into the plans of Amorim like he did last season.

Obi has a lot to learn and he is currently adding new qualities to his game and evolving as a forward which is encouraging to see.

Now, he will want to start scoring more regularly.
