Why a Spain World Cup trophy win is only way Man Utd do not benefit from this summer’s FIFA tournament

Manchester United would not take away much from the World Cup in Canada, United States and Mexico if Spain were to emerge victorious at the competition.

Spain are the first team to reach the final of this summer’s World Cup tournament after La Roja overcame 2018 champions France in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro denied France from reaching a third consecutive World Cup final and Didier Deschamps’ men crashed out of the tournament.

Euro 2024 champions Spain are the only scenario where Manchester United would not benefit in any meaningful way if they beat England or Argentina in the final.

Which Man Utd talents have the best chance of making it to World Cup 2030?

Who do you think will play a part in the next World Cup?

Man Utd would not see a player return to Old Trafford with a World Cup winner’s medal in the event of a Spain win

Argentina and England will meet on Wednesday evening on the other side of the semi-final bracket, with the World Cup clash slated for an 8pm UK kick-off time.

The Red Devils have no current first-team player in the 26-man Spain squad, meaning that nobody would return to Old Trafford with a winner’s medal.

However, Manchester United do have three players in the remaining semi-final fixture, with Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford both playing for England.

Both Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have the chance to secure a rare World Cup winner’s medal for the first time in their respective playing careers.

Lisandro Martinez, on the other hand, is in contention for a second winner’s medal if Argentina can successfully defend their World Cup championship crown this summer.

The 28-year-old United defender was part of the Argentina squad that overcame France on penalties in the thrilling 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

The World Cup trophy is all to play for, as a Man Utd player could return with a much-needed boost in confidence

A second World Cup winner’s medal could do wonders for the confidence of Lisandro Martinez, whose 2025-26 campaign was once again disrupted by injuries.

Kobbie Mainoo has not played a single minute for England so far, but the 21-year-old Man Utd midfielder could still walk away with a World Cup medal this summer.

Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after the 28-year-old England forward’s permanent move to Barcelona failed to materialise.

However, England’s success at the World Cup could see Man Utd try to apply a ‘premium’ price tag to Rashford’s name in a potential summer sale.

The Three Lions will meet defending World Cup champions Argentina at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for their huge semi-final encounter.
