Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is continuing his terrific club form by starring for England.
He struck two goals in England’s win over Wales, the first direct from a free-kick, in a 3-0 victory for the Three Lions.
In doing so he scored the 100th ever goal for England at a World Cup finals, while becoming his country’s leading scorer at the 2022 tournament.
His free-kick was the first scored by any player in Qatar, and he also matched an impressive tally from a Manchester United perspective.
Rashford matches Sir Bobby Charlton
Marcus Rashford now has three goals at the World Cup, and this is the highest of any Manchester United player for England at a major tournament since 1966.
Opta reports: “Marcus Rashford is the first Manchester United player to score three goals at a major tournament for England since Bobby Charlton at the 1966 World Cup.”
Sir Bobby Charlton went on to win the trophy with England that year – so Rashford’s scoring streak is a good omen.
Rashford also has a chance to further add to his tally, he is right in the mix for the World Cup Golden Boot, no player currently has more than three goals.
England face Senegal on Sunday in the last 16, competing for a place in the quarter-finals.
Rashford has played himself into starting contention for the fixture, it will be hard for Gareth Southgate to leave him out after his performance against Wales.
He is a man in form, currently Manchester United’s top scorer for the season, and England’s in Qatar.
