How Man Utd have had ‘last laugh’ over Thomas Tuchel now after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat

Manchester United might have missed out on Thomas Tuchel, but the England boss’ woes were on full display in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina.

Thomas Tuchel had been on the verge of leading the Three Lions to their first World Cup final since England’s famed triumph at Wembley back in 1966.

However, the 52-year-old German was stunned after 2022 World Cup champions Argentina completed a second-half turnaround at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez saw England crash out of the World Cup on Wednesday evening after their 1-0 lead had collapsed.

Man Utd have benefited more from the English FA’s decision to extend Thomas Tuchel’s contract

The English Football Association were hailed by some people at the time after they extended Thomas Tuchel’s tenure with England back in February.

Manchester United had been heavily linked with Tuchel again after Ruben Amorim had been sacked from his role at the Premier League back in January.

Ineos had tried to bring the England manager to Old Trafford back in 2024 after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime looked to replace Erik ten Hag as United manager.

Tuchel had officially become the England boss in 2025 and his initial contract with the Three Lions would have expired after the World Cup this summer.

However, the FA’s bid to prevent Tuchel from potentially being snapped up by Man Utd saw him ink a deal through to Euro 2028, which will be hosted in the UK and Ireland.

Ineos and Man Utd have come out looking much better than the FA after Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup setback

Ineos have now eliminated the ‘drama’ of having former Chelsea boss Tuchel arrive at Old Trafford on the back of England’s exit from a World Cup tournament.

Instead, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime made the ‘right’ call to move forward after Tuchel signed his England deal and stuck with Michael Carrick for the long term at United.

Michael Carrick, who initially arrived as interim manager at Old Trafford back in January, permanently succeeded Ruben Amorim as the club’s head coach in May.

United have been able to put the foundation down for this summer’s transfer activity ahead of the start of the Red Devils’ pre-season tour under manager Carrick.

The ‘last laugh’ has well and truly been put in United’s corner, all the while the FA’s decision looks more premature amid the fallout from England’s World Cup exit.
