Manchester United interested in Matheus Cunha
Manchester United hold interest in Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha, claims ESPN’s Julien Laurens.
He says the 23-year-old is on United’s striker shortlist and is ‘keen’ to join Manchester United.
Who is Matheus Cunha
Cunha signed for Atletico Madrid last summer for £21 million from Hertha Berlin.
His first season in Spain was a struggle, scoring only seven goals in all competitions, however, this was mainly owed to a lack of game time.
From Cunha’s 29 La Liga appearances last season, only eight came as a starter.
His record at Hertha Berlin was not especially prolific either, where he scored 13 goals in 40 games for the club after a move from RB Leipzig.
Cunha has seven international caps for Brazil although has not scored yet for his country.
He has only reached double figures once in a season, this came at the start of his career in Switzerland with FC Sion.
United’s striker situation
United were linked to Espanyol forward Raul de Tomas last night, Spanish outlet Cope reported.
Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata was another name linked, while Guillem Balague suggested today that the Spanish side remain keen on Cristiano Ronaldo.
United are reliant on Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo up front, the latter of who wants to leave.
Cunha does not have a goal record to excite fans, but it is positive to see the club targeting a younger forward, after an ill-thought out approach for Marko Arnautovic a week ago.
The Athletic has even suggested Jamie Vardy could be a target for the Red Devils, and with a fortnight to go before the transfer deadline, it seems there are options; the club just have to pick the right one.
