Cristiano Ronaldo‘s exit routes from Manchester United have been limited all summer, with the club so far determined to keep him.
This has got Manchester United nowhere so far, with the club ranking bottom of the Premier League after two games.
The Athletic report Erik ten Hag may now be open to allowing Ronaldo to leave, with his re-integration into the first team group described as ‘challenging’.
One option to re-emerge is the possibility of Atletico Madrid getting involved in the chase again.
Atletico Madrid still want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague says Atletico Madrid remain keen on Cristiano Ronaldo, with manager Diego Simeone pushing the idea.
He says Ronaldo is open to the switch, with his agent Jorge Mendes working behind the scenes.
This would be a highly controversial move, with Ronaldo risking ruining his reputation with his former club Real Madrid by joining their rivals.
Atletico Madrid supporters have also expressed their feelings already against a move, displaying a banner which made clear Ronaldo was not welcome.
With Manchester United’s start to the season being so terrible, and Cristiano Ronaldo visibly unhappy at being a part of it, the club may have to accept that letting him leave is for the best.
If Atletico is the troubled path he chooses to tread, at risk of upsetting two sets of supporters, so be it.
