Manchester United have just been given their dream scenario for Andre Onana, but with a slight catch.
After spending the last season on loan at Trabzonspor, Andre Onana is set to return to Carrington this pre-season.
The goalkeeper reportedly has plans to challenge Senne Lammens for the No. 1 spot at Old Trafford, but it would be a surprise if Man Utd entertained that possibility.
The Turkish side’s president has just given the club their dream scenario with Onana, but with a catch.
What fee should Man Utd demand for Andre Onana in summer 2026?
Andre Onana cost an initial £43.8 million in 2023
Trabzonspor confident of Andre Onana deal
Onana has been fairly reliable for the Turkish side this season despite some hiccups, and he has also developed a good relationship with the fanbase.
Unlike Marcus Rashford’s deal with Barcelona, they didn’t have any buy option for Onana, so he was bound to return to Old Trafford.
However, he has impressed enough that Trabzonspor showed interest in keeping him.
The issue, as always with the contracts handed out under the Glazers, was the wage, especially after United’s UCL qualification will hike it.
However, Trabzonspor president has struck a confident tone about the club’s prospects to satisfy Onana’s financial demands in a huge boost for United.
He said [via Turkish outlet Ajansspor]: “I think Andre Onana will stay in the team. Because we gave the number he wanted in financial matters. The fans love it too. A quality person. I don’t think we’ll have a problem.”
Trabzonspor’s Onana statement misses key detail
At first glance, it’s great news for Man Utd fans and the club that the Turkish side are willing to match Onana’s demands.
Who is the best Man Utd player to never play at a World Cup? 🏆🤔
Man Utd had a Ballon d'Or winner who never played at a World Cup.
It means United won’t have to pay a portion of his massive wages, which is a big saving, but there is a catch.
Nowhere does their club president talk about how those talks to keep Onana will do with United.
It’s clear that if they pay Onana’s massive wages, coupled with the player out of favour at United, Trabzonspor will massively lowball United.
This is the catch with shifting every Glazer-era contract which hangs around United’s neck like an albatross.
The question is, are United just happy to see the back of him and write it off as a mistake of the previous regime, or dig their heels in and try to repair their reputation?
Trabzonspor are clearly playing the same game as Barcelona are with Rashford. Ineos need to put their foot down at some point.
