Ruben Amorim reaches verdict on two academy youngsters for January, Man Utd ‘actively’ working

The first transfer window under any manager is a chance to put their initial stamps on the squad and when it comes in the middle of a wretched season, the importance increases even more.

That’s the situation Ruben Amorim finds himself in at Manchester United this January in a season where the club is breaking all sorts of wrong records every game.

Ruthless decisiveness is needed because despite it being a winter window, United can no longer afford to kick the can down the road to the summer.

The Man Utd manager has apparently already started on that route, reaching a verdict on the future of two youngsters in the academy, with the club now working to make his wish come true.

Harry Amass and Dan Gore verdict reached

Financial Fair Play has made it so that the clubs are incentivised to sell their academy products as they represent pure profit on the books.

It’s cynical but for United, lumbered with years of Glazers’ mismanagement, this looks like the only way to get out of a hole they kept digging themselves into.

However, there still needs to be a critical balancing act at play because they run the risk of giving up on an academy prospect who is destined for stardom.

In fact, that is exactly what has happened with Alvaro Fernandez, flourishing at SL Benfica at a position United desperately need reinforcements in.

Manchester World reports that a fine middle ground has been reached in the case of Dan Gore and Harry Amass, with United ‘prioritising’ a loan move in January for the pair.

Other exits might still follow beyond these two but Amass and Gore are looked at as urgent cases of players needing senior football to keep developing.

Amass and Gore are correct priorities

Amass was among the stars of the pre-season last summer but he has long been marked as someone who lacks the physicality to succeed against top-level opposition.

The hope is that senior football challenges him in that regard where he can’t get by on his technical prowess alone.

Still just 17, a season or two of senior football in the lower leagues could be exactly the experience he needs before he’s ready to challenge for a senior berth.

United’s signing of Diego Leon further complicates matters for Amass so he’ll be extra driven to make a difference on loan, if and when that happens.

As for Gore, his is a case of extreme bad luck at the worst possible timing. The star of the 2022 pre-season, constant injuries have never allowed him to make good on the vast potential he showed back then.

His Port Vale loan failed due to injuries as well and just as he was starting get some minutes in his legs this season, another issue hit him.

Having made five appearances for the U21s this year, his time is wasted with youth football at the age of 20. A League One or Championship move would be ideal.
