Ruben Amorim already knows the signing he wants after Bryan Mbeumo at Man United, it isn’t a striker

Manchester United are closing in on making their second major signing of the summer.

After an initial £45m bid for Bryan Mbeumo was rejected by Brentford, Manchester United continued to hold talks to find a solution.

Now, a new £60m+ bid for Mbeumo has been submitted, which should match Brentford’s valuation of the 25-year-old star.

Should it be accepted, Mbeumo will join Matheus Cunha at United as new attacking options for Ruben Amorim. While the search for a striker continues, there is another position United could now look to improve.

Ruben Amorim wants Man United to sign a midfielder

After losing the Europa League final last season and finishing 15th in the Premier League, it was no secret that United would be working with a much smaller budget.

But so far, the Red Devils have been able to attract two Premier League stars, and a striker is still on the shopping list to complete the attacking overhaul.

However, according to The Athletic, Amorim also wants United to sign an “athletic midfielder” this summer ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

With Viktor Gyokeres going on strike at Sporting and Victor Osimhen rumours slowing down, the striker search could be put on hold while a midfield target is pursued.

Christian Eriksen left United this summer upon the expiry of his contract, which means Amorim is set to have fewer options in midfield next season.

Ruben Amorim wants ‘athletic’ and powerful signings

Since his appointment last November, Amorim has stressed the importance of physicality in the Premier League and how much United are missing it.

Ahead of the summer window, Amorim demanded Ineos sign athletic players after being disappointed by his side’s physical presence last season.

It explains why both Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo would arrive as Premier League-proven players who are familiar with the demands of English football.

Patrick Dorgu was described as a “machine” before his move to United last January, and it seems this summer’s signings will follow a similar pattern.

Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system requires two extremely fit and physical midfielders, and clearly the Portuguese head coach feels his current options aren’t a good fit.
