Fabrizio Romano insists there is truth to the reports claiming that Manchester United could look to bring former Chelsea forward Timo Werner back to the Premier League during the January transfer window.
The Germany international’s reputation may have taken a beating during his time at Chelsea but there are a few good reasons why Erik ten Hag may be keen to work with Timo Werner at Old Trafford.
Consider what the Manchester United boss looks for in a centre-forward. A relentless work-ethic, the ability to press from the front, never-ending movement, versatility, and the ability to get the best out of the players alongside him.

Mason Mount, United’s former Chelsea midfielder, knows first-hand just how effective Werner can be when at his barnstorming best. And while much has been made of his wasteful streak in the final third, this is still a player who broke the 30-goal barrier at RB Leipzig in 2019/20.
The one-time Stuttgart whizzkid scored a further 16 after returning to the Red Bull Arena last term too, despite struggling to establish himself as a regular in Marco Rose’s XI.
And Romano, writing in his Caught Offside column, says that there is truth to the reports suggesting that Man United have enquired about Werner’s availability heading into the winter.
“My understanding (is) that United have asked to be kept informed on his situation,” Romano explains. “It’s possible he could leave RB Leipzig this January after becoming unhappy at the club.”

Much will depend on who takes over as Man United’s director of football, with Paul Mitchell, Lee Congerton, Dougie Freedman or another candidate likely to seize control over recruitment.
“There’s still nothing advanced at this stage (with Werner),” Romano adds. “And the new director at Old Trafford will be key to seeing how this deal progresses, or if they pursue it at all.”
A striker is one of four positions United could look to strengthen in the winter. According to The Guardian, a defensive midfielder, a centre-half, and a number eight are also being prioritised.
