Manchester United’s hopes of a Sir Jim Ratcliffe-led revolution have received a major boost as the INEOS chief will not have to ‘run major decisions past the Glazers’ should he complete their 25 per cent takeover of the Premier League giants.
This was one of the main concerns among Manchester United supporters.
It is all well and good Sir Jim Ratcliffe wanting to take control of the ‘sporting’ aspect of the club. But what hope would the 71-year-old billionaire really have of making a genuine difference if the Glazers were still making the final call on all the big decisions?

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Manchester United takeover close
Imagine, for instance, that Ratcliffe’s new recruitment team – potentially led by a Paul Mitchell, a Lee Congerton, a Dougie Freedman or former Liverpool talentspotter Michael Edwards – had identified an exciting player they were keen to bring in to Old Trafford, only to see Joel Glazer veto a deal for a player he hadn’t even heard of until his name was brought up over a Zoom call.
Fortunately, these latest reports from The Independent suggest that such concerns are unfounded.
Unlike previously, the Glazers will not have to be consulted by Ratcliffe’s staff on ‘major decisions’.
This is something which should not only speed up the decision-making process at Old Trafford – the Glazers are famously and painfully slow to make up their minds – but should also ensure that footballing decisions are taking by football experts.
A novelty, at a post-Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United, and presumably a welcome alternation in the eyes of Erik ten Hag.
Glazer power diminished at Old Trafford
Ratcliffe, once his 25 per cent takeover is ratified, is expected to hire Jean-Claude Blanc as Richard Arnold’s replacement. Blanc is credited for being the brains behind the success of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
A top-level director of football is also likely to arrive to work in conjunction with Erik ten Hag, and share the burden when it comes to bringing new players into Old Trafford. Mitchell, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, is seemingly the favourite.
