Lionel Messi now wants Inter Miami to sign ex-Man Utd defender

Manchester United fans could now see Marcos Rojo join forces with Lionel Messi as a move to Inter Miami becomes a real possibility.

United’s business in the first window under Louis van Gaal was a mixed bag.

Angel Di Maria arrived with a big fee and huge expectations but lasted just one year at Old Trafford.

Ander Herrera became a fan favourite, Luke Shaw is still going strong at Old Trafford and Daley Blind is now being likened to Paolo Maldini more than five years since leaving United.

Then there is Marcos Rojo, who became something of a cult hero at Old Trafford following a £16million move from Sporting.

United fans knew to expect the unexpected from Rojo after witnessing him attempt a rabona clearance at the World Cup just weeks before his move.

Capable of the brilliant and the ridiculous, Rojo turned out more than 100 times at United but never passed 22 league appearances in a season.

Marcos Rojo wanted by Inter Miami

Rojo quit United for Boca Juniors in 2021 but suffered a major knee injury in 2022.

Injuries have continued to be a problem for Rojo and a calf injury kept him out of the Copa Libertadores final in November.

Now 33, Rojo could be on the move again – and this move would be a big one.

Argentinian reporter Hernan Castillo claims that Inter Miami boss Gerardo Martino and his star player Lionel Messi have called Rojo to try and bring him to Major League Soccer.

Brazilian side Palmeiras are also interested but the chance to join up with Messi may be very appealing to Rojo.

Messi and Rojo know each other well from the Argentinian national team setup and Rojo could be the latest of Messi’s friends to join Inter Miami after Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez.

Rojo not the only ex-United player linked with Inter Miami

United fans may take an interest in Inter Miami with David Beckham being a part-owner of the club.

Former United defender Phil Neville managed Inter Miami for more than two years too, so there have been United connections to the MLS side.

Beckham was even linked with a move to sign former United goalkeeper David De Gea in November, believing that he could be lured to Florida.

Rojo now seems like a more likely signing with Messi ultimately pulling the string at Inter Miami.

The veteran defender is now left with plenty to think about but teaming up with Messi again before they retire is surely better than anything Palmeiras can offer.
