Manchester United’s January transfer window has the potential to send shockwaves through Europe.
Despite being one of the continent’s biggest clubs, United are being heavily restricted by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR).
The 20-time league winners need to make signings but must operate within the confines of these financial regulations, and that is causing the Manchester United owners to come under fire.
Now responsible for the club’s sporting decisions, new minority shareholder and INEOS CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe has to find a way to balance the books, and that has led to almost every Manchester United first-team player being made available for transfer, including homegrown prospect Kobbie Mainoo.
It isn’t just Mainoo who is being linked with an Old Trafford exit though. There is another player who has been discussed during the club’s recent transfer talks with Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG hold Alejandro Garnacho transfer discussions
At the age of 20, and still with three-and-a-half years left on his contract, Alejandro Garnacho is one of United’s highest-valued players, and according to the Independent, is now being considered by Paris Saint-Germain.
Although United have their own targets, including Nuno Mendes, a potential deal for Garnacho, which has already come up in Paris Saint-Germain’s transfer discussions, would not involve the two players completing a swap-deal.
While the exact extent of Ligue 1 giants’ interest remains unknown, knowing Garnacho is available for transfer will certainly offer them a major boost as they consider luring one of United’s brightest talents to the French capital.
Garnacho’s Manchester United future in doubt following Ruben Amorim touchline falling out
Garnacho’s suspected availability comes after a recent report The Athletic revealed United will ‘reluctantly’ listen to offers in order to comply with PSR rules. The same applies for Mainoo and other first-team players.
And although Mainoo is being courted by Chelsea after his recent contract talks failed to progress, Manchester United will likely return with an improved offer and agree to extend the midfielder’s stay.
Garnacho, on the other hand, could be nearing the end of his time at Old Trafford. Despite being one of the club’s most exciting prospects, the former Atletico Madrid winger has struggled following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.
According to the Daily Mail, the Argentine forward was dropped for December’s Manchester derby.
Garnacho is believed to have turned his back on Amorim on the touchline and walked away while the Manchester United manager was giving out tactical instructions against Plzen.
Getting on the wrong side of Amroim could be bad news for any player, especially a young prospect like Garnacho. Marcus Rashford is also experiencing the United boss’ tough approach to man-management. Rashford could now complete a transfer to AC Milan as a result.
There are also concerns that neither wide-player fits Amorim’s tactical system — a real shame for Garnacho, who, since making his United debut two-a-half-years ago, has gone on to score 23 goals and register 13 assists in 115 games in all competitions.
