Manchester United are in the market for a new left-back and it seems Ineos could turn to Portugal and raid Sporting Lisbon.
The last time Manchester United did business with Sporting Lisbon, it was regarding the appointment of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was sacked by United this season with the Red Devils in sixth. While Amorim didn’t want to sign Sporting players, it seems Ineos could go shopping at the Portuguese club this summer.
United are in the market for a left-back to be the long-term successor to Luke Shaw and Sporting’s Maxi Araujo is the latest player linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Man United hold ‘talks’ with Maxi Araujo
According to Portuguese outlet ABola, via SportWitness, United have held “exploratory talks” with Sporting over Maxi Araujo.
Araujo, a 26-year-old left-back, has been in great form for Sporting this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.
As per Transfermarkt, out of Araujo’s 44 appearances this season, he has played at left-back 35 times, with his other appearances in a left-wing position.
The report claims that Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham have also held talks, while Atletico Madrid have also shown interest.
There is a £69m release clause in Araujo’s contract, but United would likely bid considerably under that value if they pursue the Uruguayan star.
Michael Carrick now has more wins than Ruben Amorim this season in seven fewer games! What does this tell you…?
Maxi Araujo was a huge admirer of Ruben Amorim
Araujo was signed at Sporting by Amorim at the start of the 2024/25 season – the same campaign the coach was appointed at Old Trafford.
But in their short time together, Amorim clearly had a big impact on Araujo.
Araujo praised Amorim’s man management and backed him to thrive at United.

“I’ve never seen a coach capable of reaching out to a player so much. For me, he was one of the best coaches I’ve worked with, without a doubt,” Araujo said.
His chance of playing under Amorim at Old Trafford has well and truly sailed, though.
