‘No doubts’… Fabrizio Romano gives update on Man Utd’s wing-back search, including Dorgu alternative

Manchester United are ramping up their efforts in the January transfer window as Ruben Amorim looks to make at least one signing.

Amorim needs a new left-sided wing-back to help fit his system of play, which includes three centre-backs and two flying wing-backs.

Leece’s Patrick Dorgu has emerged as the manager’s preferred target but a deal has yet to be agreed.

And that could open the door for one former player to make a surprise return to his old stomping ground.

Ruben Amorim guaranteed new left wing-back

Amorim will be pleased that United’s owners are backing him in his first transfer window.

It is well documented that what the 39-year-old has at his disposal are not his choice of players, so getting his first one through the door is crucial.

Spurs are trying to hijack United’s move for Dorgu, but, according to Fabrizio Romano, there are no concerns over the position.

United will definitely sign a new left wing-back, and even if that’s not Dorgu, it could mean the Red Devils trigger Alvaro Fernandez‘ £15.2 million buy-back clause from Benfica.

Alvaro Fernandez possible alternative to Dorgu

Fernandez joined United’s youth academy in 2020, and although he failed to make an appearance for the first team, he did feature 62 times for the under-18s, 19s and 21s.

The 21-year-old was allowed to join Benfica last summer and has since made great strides in becoming one of Europe’s brightest talents.

The young Spaniard is enjoying an excellent breakthrough in Portugal where he has already contributed to four goals and five assists.

Here’s how Fernandez and Dorgu stack up against each other this season.

Fernandez put in a superb performance against Barcelona in the Champions League earlier this week with some fans demanding he is re-signed.

Even though United have a reputation for not always making the wisest choices in the transfer market, their inclusion of a relatively low buy-back clause in Fernandez’ deal of just over £15 million might turn out to be one of their shrewdest decisions in recent times.
