Sander Berge latest
Manuel Ugarte remains a key target for United as his agent Jorge Mendes touches down in England for talks.
A deal for the Paris Saint-Germain ace has not been easy though and United have alternatives in mind.
Burnley’s Sander Berge has been linked and eyebrows were raised among United fans when Berge was left out by Scott Parker as Burnley beat Luton Town on Monday.
United may have hopes of striking a deal for the Norwegian and Parker has now commented on the situation.
Speaking to the Burnley Express, Burnley boss Parker noted that Berge was injured having picked up a problem with his quad in pre-season.
Parker feels that Berge is on the ‘right track’ in terms of coming back from injury and tried to play down that he was left out because of a potential move to United.
Parker praised Berge’s attitude and professionalism and left the door open for a move by saying ‘we will see what happens’.
“He’s got a little slight quad issue. I sense the way you’re asking that question you don’t believe that he’s injured?” said Parker. “He’s definitely got an injury. He picked up an injury in Spain. He had a bit of discomfort in his quad. It’s not a big injury, it’s quite a small injury to be honest with you. But it was a bit persistent. He got a scan and we think we know where we are with it now. We’ve diagnosed it and he’s on the right track now.”
“I’m not going to speculate on Sander or any one of the players. We know how football works in the sense there’s a transfer window at this time, so every player in any football club is…it is what it is. At this present moment in time, and it’s the same with Wout [Weghorst], Sander has been absolutely nothing but the ultra professional. He trained with us for the first two weeks and he picked up a knock. We will see what happens,” he added.
Berge’s Premier League stats
Championship clubs will never find it easy to keep players when United come calling.
Reports claim that Berge is ‘excited’ about a potential move to United with wages of around £100,000-a-week on offer.
Berge could return to the Premier League with United and will be looking to improve on a record of two relegations in two full seasons in the top flight.
The 26-year-old joined Sheffield United from Genk in January 2020 and managed two goals in 29 Premier League games before dropping into the Championship.
Injuries hampered Berge at Bramall Lane, at least in his Premier League days, but he managed 37 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season.
Berge only scored once, meaning he has managed just three goals in 66 Premier League games – a far cry from his 13 goals in 68 Championship outings.
The talent is there in Berge and United may well feel that he can offer a real box-to-box presence if a deal can be done.
