An update on Manchester United’s move for Netherlands international defender Matthijs de Ligt.
After the Netherlands were eliminated from Euro 2024 by England, Manchester United were expected to wrap up deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt.
United are only halfway there. A deal for Joshua Zirkzee was struck within days, while United’s next move was to sign Leny Yoro from Lille.
Matthijs de Ligt remains in limbo, hoping a move to Manchester United comes to fruition.

Matthijs de Ligt latest
Manchester United had an opening offer for Matthis de Ligt turned down this week. That at least demonstrated United’s intent to still land the Dutchman.
Fabrizio Romano has underlined the situation as he understands it in his podcast, explaining that the structure of the deal is holding up the agreement.
He told the Here We Go podcast that De Ligt is intent on landing his move to Old Trafford.
Romano explains: “Matthijs de Ligt is waiting for Manchester United. He has agreed on personal terms, he wants to go to Man United. He wants to feel important.
“The agreement is still not in place, because Manchester United are not offering 50 milliom Euros guaranteed.
“Man United want to include add-ons in the structure of the deal. Bayern want guaranteed money, so the negotiations continue, negotiations ongoing, but it is far from being completed.”
Quick deal better for all concerned
Bayern may need to sell in order to buy their own transfer targets after shelling out on Michael Olise and Joao Palhinha earlier this summer.
A quick negotiation on Matthijs de Ligt is better for all concerned, including the player.
United are due to head out on tour to the USA later this week, and while it seems De Ligt won’t be signed in time to join the travelling party, he could yet join the team out there.
While a deal is not in place yet, United are not too far away. The player want to sign, Bayern are open to a sale, and the clubs have a broad consensus in terms of a fee – it is just the structure holding things up.
When a deal gets this close, it is rare that both parties walk away. Expect this to get done before long.
