Manchester United’s top striker target handed late Euro 2024 call-up

Manchester United can now focus on transfer business having decided to keep hold of manager Erik ten Hag.

Ineos have taken their time and finally come to a decision over the future of Erik ten Hag, more than two weeks since beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Reports suggest that Ineos will be keeping Ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout after weeks of speculation.

Fans have wanted clarity on the situation and United can now start to put some transfer plans into place for the summer.

United’s budget may not be huge but new recruits are certainly needed after finishing eighth in the Premier League table.

Finding another striker to support Rasmus Hojlund in the final third has to be a top priority and one target is gaining even more focus.

Joshua Zirkzee receives Netherlands call-up

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has decided to stay put despite reportedly having an offer on the table from United.

The Slovenian hitman appeared to be United’s top striking target but must now move on with Sesko deciding not to move.

Reports earlier in the week suggested that United’s top priority is now Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee scored 11 times in 34 Serie A games this past season, putting himself on United’s radar whilst helping Bologna qualify for the Champions League.

The 23-year-old is though to have a £34million release clause in his contract with United ‘making it clear’ that he is wanted at Old Trafford.

Zirkzee was originally left out of the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, but that situation has now changed.

Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners have both suffered injuries and will miss the tournament, leaving boss Ronald Koeman to scramble for replacements.

Rather than call up two more midfielders, Koeman has called up left back Ian Maatsen and striker Zirkzee to bolster his squad.

Zirkzee now has the chance to make an impact in Germany, even if he is likely to be coming off the bench.

Koeman does already have a number of strikers at his disposal, including former Manchester United duo Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst.

Add in Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen and Brian Brobbey and it looks like a difficult path to action for Zirkzee – but his displays for Bologna prove that he can make a big impact when given a chance.

Manchester United can scout Zirkzee at Euro 2024

Zirkzee’s call-up will give United a potential opportunity to watch him in action on the big stage.

Yes, Zirkzee may just be reduced to cameo appearances but it’s a chance for United to see how Zirkzee can impact games off the bench.

That may be what he would be asked to do at Old Trafford as support for Hojlund, so Euro 2024 would be another part of the evaluation alongside his starring role at Bologna.

The Netherlands take on Poland to start their Euro 2024 campaign on Sunday before facing France and Austria in a tricky Group D.

United scouts will surely pay close attention to Zirkzee with his late call-up presenting another opportunity to watch the Dutchman in action.
