Manchester United transfer gossip: Yann Sommer deal could be struck this month

Manchester United could move to sign Swiss international goalkeeper Yann Sommer as soon as this month, report Talksport.

The possible move comes after Newcastle’s unexpected decision to recall Martin Dubravka on January 1.

Dubravka had been United’s back-up goalkeeper behind David de Gea. Tom Heaton is currently set to step up from third to second choice.

This could change if United bring forward reported plans to sign Yann Sommer, who is out of contract at Borussia Moenchengladbach this summer.

Yann Sommer deal could be struck this month

ESPN reported last month that Manchester United have begun working on a deal to sign Yann Sommer next summer.

Sommer is now free to negotiate with the Red Devils and sign a pre-contract agreement.

The 34-year-old was Switzerland’s first choice at the World Cup and is a regular in the Bundesliga for ‘Gladbach.

Depending on Erik ten Hag’s confidence, or lack of, in Tom Heaton, United may push to sign the goalkeeper this January.

He would cost a small fee, which may depend on a couple of factors.

United’s priority is to sign a striker, either permanently or loan. The club could also look to raise funds from selling or or two fringe players, which would contribute to either a striker move, or Sommer, or both.

Talksport claim: “The Red Devils are hoping to persuade the Bundesliga outfit to allow Sommer to leave for a knockdown fee this month.

It’s currently unclear whether Erik ten Hag intends for Sommer to be his first choice next season, or a back-up, either to David de Gea, or another incoming stopper.

But getting him in early would provide some extra flexibility in case De Gea’s contract is not extended, should negotiations fall through, and if he were to perform well, it could even influence a decision over the Spaniard.

Another update suggests United could be looking at Jack Butland as another option, reports The Mail.
