Manchester United target ‘far too good’ this season amid transfer competition from Arsenal

Manchester United have seen Andre Onana step up this season but continue to be linked with signing other goalkeepers in 2025.

Erik ten Hag had one clear target in mind when Manchester United released David De Gea in 2023.

Andre Onana was the man Ten Hag wanted having worked together at Ajax before he helped Inter reach the Champions League final.

United signed Onana in a deal worth up to £47million but the Cameroonian struggled at times in his debut season at Old Trafford.

Onana has been one of United’s better performers this season though, stepping up with some strong displays.

Rio Ferdinand has praised Onana’s displays but United remain in the market for another goalkeeper.

Manchester United target earning rave reviews

Altay Bayindir has barely been seen for the second season in a row and few could blame the Turkish international for considering a move away in 2025.

United need to have goalkeeping targets in mind in case Bayindir does want to leave and a couple of names have been mentioned.

United have eyed Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson with goalkeeping scout Tony Coton taking a keen interest.

Sam Tickle is on United’s radar too with the Wigan Athletic stopper impressing for the League One side.

Tickle has earned one England Under-21 cap and the local media in Wigan have been raving about his displays this season.

Wigan Today have rated Tickle’s season so far at a 9/10 and believe that he is simply ‘too good’ to be playing in League One.

“Last year’s player of the year and already the frontrunner for this season’s awards…far too good for this level, as he proves on a weekly basis,” they said.

United face competition for Sam Tickle

Tickle’s displays will surely have been tracked by United and his homegrown status as a young English talent will certainly appeal.

United are far from alone in the race to sign Tickle though as his performances for Wigan continue to catch the eye.

The reports in October suggested that Arsenal are also interested in Tickle.

The Athletic noted in August that Arsenal were ‘exploring’ a deal to sign Tickle before the summer transfer deadline.

If United make a move for Tickle in 2025, Arsenal may well pose serious competition with the 22-year-old surely destined for a big move in the near future.
