Manchester United showed an interest in signing Wolves’ Nelson Semedo in January

Manchester United were eyeing up a swoop for Wolves defender Nelson Semedo this month before Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s resurgence.

That is according to the Daily Mail, and given how Wan-Bissaka’s season went before the World Cup, it was expected he would move on this month.

But by the time the window opened, Wan-Bissaka had started an unlikely return to favour and he has kept his good form going.

United, understandably, looked into alternative right-backs in the event Wan-Bissaka did go and it seems Semedo was among them.

United change plans to try and sign Semedo

The Portugal international’s contract expires at the end of the season, so United may have been eyeing a cut-price deal there.

That said, Wolves do have a one-year option on the right-back they signed for £37 million in September 2020 from Barcelona.

Wolves were one of the clubs reportedly keen on Wan-Bissaka so perhaps something could have been done with the two players swapping clubs.

Semedo was part of the Wolves side United beat on New Year’s Eve but also the team which won at Old Trafford last season.

Before he moved to Wolves, United were linked with Semedo a few times down the years.

In December 2016, it was claimed that United had sent scouts to watch Semedo play when he was still at Benfica.

Then, it was reported that United were close to sealing a deal to sign him at the end of that season, but it did not materialise.

In January 2020, he was named as a United transfer target again, and it seems once again this window that any interest will not come to anything.

For Wan-Bissaka, a huge opportunity knocks this afternoon. With Diogo Dalot out injured, he will play at right-back in today’s Manchester derby.
