Manchester United are now being linked with a move for Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Telegraph report Manchester United could now make a swoop to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before the transfer deadline, with Tottenham actually willing to do a deal with the Red Devils.

The 28-year-old has only played 45 minutes out of a possible 270 in the Premier League this season.

Hojbjerg has fallen out of favour under new manager Ange Postecoglou, with United invited to make an offer.

Jose Mourinho backing

Hojbjerg was the first Tottenham signing made by former manager Jose Mourinho back in 2020, with the midfielder recruited from Southampton.

History has shown Mourinho does not get every call right. But very often, his recruitment has been smart. He told The Mail: “I think Mr Levy did amazing for us getting such a good player for us.”

Mourinho spoke highly of Hojbjerg, telling The Athletic: “He’s a captain without needing to wear the armband.”

Hojbjerg starred in one of Mourinho’s greatest wins at Old Trafford, a 6-1 away victory with Tottenham at the start of the 2020/21 season. He provided an assist in the win.

Speaking about his best position, Hojbjerg explained: “If it’s an open match, I’d say No 8. If it’s more closed, I like to move back and set up the play.”

Ten Hag connection

Earlier this summer we pointed out Hojbjerg was a potentially available player who Erik ten Hag has a previous connection with.

Hojbjerg played for Bayern Munich’s second team under Ten Hag to start his career, and the manager explained that he wanted to sign him for Ajax in 2020 before Tottenham struck a deal with Southampton.

United are in need of midfield reinforcements, and Hojbjerg’s Premier League experience and availability may make him a useful addition.

Don’t write him off if a deal goes ahead. He is a player Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag both agree on, and that should count for something.
