Man Utd transfer target has signed new contract to 2028, club adamant they will not sell before FIFA World Club Cup

Manchester United were determined to make some moves in midfielder this summer, although it may not have gone entirely according to plan.

United had expected to cash in on Casemiro in the summer, before coming to the realisation no club was going to pay the asking price.

In the end it was Scott McTominay who was sold, with Manuel Ugarte coming in. And aside from untested and as yet unseen teenager Sekou Kone, that was as far as the midfield changes went.

One player who was briefly linked with a move was Colombia international midfielder Richard Rios.

Manchester United fans were excited by links to Richard Rios when they emerged in late July.

Goal had claimed that United scouts were impressed by Rios’ performances at the Copa America, where Colombia reached the final.

Rios plays for Brazilian champions Palmeiras, and a deal did not progress beyond the speculation. But it has not quite gone away.

A new report from Caught Offside has claimed Manchester United remain interested in a move for the 24-year-old midfielder – along with other Premier League clubs.

Richard Rios latest

Palmeiras are determined to keep Richard Rios and within the past fortnight they even renewed his contract.

Rios has signed a new deal running to 2028, with his very expensive release clause intact.

“I am very happy to renew this contract, and so is my family. We are very grateful to Palmeiras, who opened the doors to me. It is something gratifying for me and I hope to give back on the field to the fans and the club”, Rios told the Palmeiras website.

And according to Vamo Futebol, Palmeiras do not want to sell Rios at least until after the FIFA Club World Cup next summer.

Palmeiras are competing at FIFA’s new tournament, which has caused controversy amid debate over the amount of games players are being asked to play.

But for the Brazilian club, they see it as a profile-raiser, a potential money-spinner, where Rios’ value could soar, along with a few of their other players.

Manchester United may keep tabs on him, but this is not a deal we would regard as at all likely for January, and even next summer, probably doubtful.
